How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home: 3 Simple Methods

A ring that fits well isn’t just about comfort (though that’s a big part of it). It’s about the confidence that comes with it. When your ring sits just right, there’s no distractions, no worrying it’ll slip off mid-handshake, and no struggle to twist it off at the end of the day. In fact, wearing the right ring is one of the smallest things you can add to your look that can have the biggest impact.

Watch the video above to learn how to measure your ring size in less than 1 minute. Or, click any of the links below for answers to more of your questions.

4 Factors that Affect Your Ring Size

Not many people know this, but your fingers don’t actually stay the same size all day. In fact, they’re constantly changing. Sounds weird, but think about it. Have you ever noticed how a ring feels tighter in the heat or a bit loose after being out in the cold? That’s totally normal.

If you’ve never worn rings before, don’t worry, you’re in the right place. The truth is, your finger size can shift for all kinds of reasons. Once you’re aware of what affects it, finding the right fit becomes so much easier. Here’s what can cause those changes:

1. Body Temperature Affects Your Ring Size

Like we mentioned earlier, your fingers shrink when it’s cold and swell up when it’s hot. It’s one of the most common reasons your ring might feel too tight or too loose depending on the weather.

2. Your Ring Size Changes During the Day

Your fingers are usually at their smallest in the morning and will gradually get larger as the day goes on. That’s because your hands warm up as your body becomes more active. That’s why measuring your ring size in the evening is usually the safest bet. That’s when your fingers are at their largest, and your ring won’t end up feeling too tight later on.

3. Hydration and Salt Can Impact Your Ring Size

If you’re dehydrated, your body can hold onto water, which can lead to swelling in your fingers. The same goes for too much salt, which can cause your body to retain water and make your fingers puffier than usual. When you’re properly hydrated and balanced, your fingers are more likely to be their natural size.

4. Your Knuckle Size Affects Your Ring Size

If your knuckles are noticeably bigger than the base of your finger (or the other way around), it can make sizing a little more complicated. It’s usually not too common, but if that’s the case for you, it’s worth keeping in mind when finding the perfect fit. A little extra tip for you would be to look for rings that have a comfort fit inner band like these.

What Does the Perfect Ring Fit Feel Like?

Great question. Your ring should feel secure. Snug enough that it won’t fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle with a gentle twist. If it’s too loose, it might slip off when you least expect it. Or, if it’s too tight, you’ll be wrestling to get it off at the end of the day. Neither is what you want.

You’re aiming for a fit with minimal slipping, no pinching, and no need to constantly adjust it. Just a ring that feels right, all day, every day. It might sound simple, but the right size is really just a ring that feels comfortable on your finger. If you’re new to wearing rings, though, it can be hard to know what that actually feels like.

The truth is, even with the perfect fit, you’ll still notice it at first. That’s totally normal. Give it a bit of time. Once you get used to it, it’ll feel like second nature. Eventually, you’ll forget you’re even wearing it altogether.

3 Easy Ways to Measure Your Ring Size

Let’s go over three ways to measure your ring size at home so you can finally get on with ordering that ring you’ve had your eye on.

1. How to Measure Your Ring Size With String or Paper

The simplest tools do the job just fine. Here’s how:

Step 1: Grab a piece of non-stretchy string, dental floss, or a strip of paper.
Step 2: Wrap it around the base of your finger (just below the knuckle).
Step 3: Mark where it overlaps, then measure the length in millimetres.
Step 4: Match the measurement to a ring size chart to find your perfect fit.

2. How to Use a Ring Sizer to Measure Your Ring Size (Recommended)

This is by far the easiest and most accurate method. Most brands offer a simple plastic ring sizer like this one. Just slip your finger through and tighten it until it fits comfortably around the base of your finger. That’s it, no guesswork, no mistakes. The hardest part is having to wait a little longer to order the ring you’ve had your eye on. But, it’ll be worth the wait when it fits just right.

3. How to Measure Your Ring Size Using an Existing Ring

Already got a ring that fits perfectly? Use it. Just lay it flat and measure the inside diameter with a ruler. Now, let’s say you’re upgrading to something like this round signet ring. Simply match that measurement with the sizing chart on the product page of that ring. This method makes it easy, and you’ll have your new ring in no time, with a fit that feels perfect.

Mistakes to Avoid When Measuring Your Ring Size

One thing people tend to forget is how the width of the band can affect the fit. Thicker rings tend to feel a bit tighter, so if you’re upgrading to a wider band than you’re used to, it might be worth sizing up ever so slightly.

To help you get it right, here are three extra tips worth knowing:

  1. Measure More Than Once: It’s common for your fingers to change size throughout the day. So make sure to measure a few times: once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and again in the evening. The evening measurement is usually the most accurate, since your fingers tend to be slightly bigger by then.

  2. Measure The Correct Hand: Don’t assume both hands are the same size. Your dominant hand (usually the one you write with) tends to be slightly bigger. So if you’re planning to wear your ring on your right hand and you're right-handed, make sure you measure that specific finger.

  3. It’ll Feel Strange at First: Even with the best fit in the world, a new ring can feel a bit odd to begin with (especially if you’ve never worn one before). It might feel noticeable or even distracting at first, but that’s completely normal. Give it a bit of time, and soon enough, it’ll feel like second nature.
