Howlite for Men: A Calm Stone for a Busy Life
Not every stone has to make a statement. Howlite is chalk-white, crossed with thin dark lines, and it has spent most of its short history being dyed to look like something else. Left as it is, it's one of the quietest pieces of jewellery out there, and that quiet is the whole point.
Below we cover where howlite comes from, why it so often turns up in disguise, the meanings people give it, plus how to wear white beads without them looking like a holiday souvenir.

A Young Stone With a Canadian Name
Most of the stones in our range were being worn thousands of years ago. Howlite wasn't even named until 1868. That year Henry How, a chemist and geologist working in Nova Scotia, described an unfamiliar white mineral from the gypsum quarries near Windsor, and it took his name.
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate, one of a small family of minerals built around boron. It forms in rounded lumps that look a little like cauliflower heads, and when it's cut open the white is crossed by fine grey and black lines where other minerals crept into the cracks. California has long been one of the best-known sources of the stone used in jewellery.
Two things about it matter if you're going to wear it. It's soft, only 3.5 or so in Mohs terms, putting it closer to a copper coin than to quartz. And it's porous, so it soaks up whatever it touches. That second quality explains most of its history.
Howlite in Disguise
Because howlite drinks in dye so readily, it has spent much of its life pretending to be other stones. Soaked in blue, its dark veins look remarkably like the matrix running through turquoise, and dyed howlite has been sold under trade names such as turquenite. It's also coloured deep blue to stand in for lapis lazuli, and red to pass as coral.
None of that is a problem when it's sold honestly. Dyed howlite is inexpensive, takes colour evenly and can look good. It only becomes an issue when a blue bead is sold as real turquoise at a turquoise price. The giveaway is usually in the cracks, where dye collects and looks darker than the rest of the stone.
It can go the other way, too: white magnesite, a similar-looking mineral, is sometimes sold as howlite.
Ours is the plain version. Every bead on our Howlite Bead Bracelet is natural howlite in the stone's own white, with grey veining that shifts across the strand.
What Does Howlite Mean?
A stone named in 1868 hasn't had time to gather ancient legends, so howlite's meanings come from modern crystal practice rather than old folklore. Think of them as tradition in the making, not anything a bracelet can promise.
Calm under pressure
This is the meaning you'll hear first. Howlite is described as a stone for slowing down, the one people reach for when work, family or a long week starts to crowd in. Our own product copy keeps it simple: calm and patience.
A longer fuse
Close behind is patience with other people. Howlite is often said to cool a quick temper and to encourage thinking before speaking.
Winding down
Some people keep a piece of howlite by the bed, or take their bracelet off last thing at night as a cue to switch off. It's a ritual, not a remedy, but rituals have their uses.
A clean slate
Its plain white has also tied it to fresh starts and to putting down whatever has been weighing on the mind. A white stone is about as close to a blank page as jewellery gets.
Worry Beads and the Habit of Pausing
There's a practical side to a calm stone that has nothing to do with belief. People have run beads through their fingers to steady themselves for centuries. Greek men flick komboloi, or worry beads, at café tables, and prayer beads in many faiths work on the same principle: something to hold while the mind settles.
A bead bracelet does a quieter version of the same job. Turning a bead or two on the wrist before a hard conversation, or while waiting for a call, is a small, private reset. If the bracelet also reminds you to take a breath, the meaning is doing its work, whatever you think of crystals.

How to Wear Howlite
Break up a dark wrist
Most men's bracelets come in black, brown, silver or gold. One strand of white interrupts all of that straight away, which is why howlite does its best work beside darker pieces rather than alone.
Put it beside matte black
Howlite and onyx are opposites in colour but close in texture, so they sit together without any fuss. The Matte Onyx Stone Bracelet is the obvious partner, and our piece on black onyx for men explains why that stone plays the steadier, more serious role of the two.
Add warmth with tiger's eye
If black and white feels too stark, bring in gold and brown instead. Tiger's eye is howlite's natural counterpart: warm where howlite is cool, bold where it's quiet. Our guide to tiger's eye goes into the stone properly, and the Tiger's Eye Obsidian Bead Bracelet brings warmth and black together on a single strand.

Choose between two whites
Howlite isn't our only white. The clover pieces covered in our mother of pearl guide have a polished, pearly glow; howlite has a softer sheen and the texture of real stone. Reach for mother of pearl to dress up, howlite to keep things relaxed.
Wear it all year
In summer, white beads look sharp against a tan and a navy or white shirt. In winter they become the one light point at the cuff of a dark knit or an overcoat sleeve.

Our Howlite Bead Bracelet
Our only howlite piece, and deliberately simple: the Howlite Bead Bracelet, a single strand of smooth, round howlite beads with no metal spacers, so nothing breaks up the white. Each bead carries its own grey veining, which means no two bracelets look quite alike.
The beads sit on a stretchy core, so it slips on and off without a clasp to fiddle with. It comes in two sizes, 19cm and 22cm. The model wears 19cm, our most popular size, which fits most wrists.

Building a Stack Around It
Howlite is at its best in company. These are the pieces we'd put next to it, listed by how many sold over the past year.
Matte Onyx Stone Bracelet
Our best-selling bead bracelet and the cleanest contrast you can give howlite. Matte black onyx beads are spaced with detailed accent beads, in silver or gold. Choose silver for a cool black and white wrist, gold for something warmer.

Tiger's Eye Obsidian Bead Bracelet
Glossy black obsidian and golden-brown tiger's eye share one strand here. Next to howlite, the Tiger's Eye Obsidian Bead Bracelet adds the warm tone and the dark tone in one go, so a two-bracelet stack looks finished.
Stone Beaded Bracelet
For a softer bridge between the two, the Stone Beaded Bracelet combines natural stones in green, cream, amber and black with polished 18ct gold accents and an adjustable clasp. Its pale beads pick up the white of the howlite, and the mix of colours keeps the stack from looking too planned.

Looking After a Soft Stone
Being soft and porous makes howlite a little more delicate than the other beads on your wrist. A few habits keep it white.
- Keep it dry. Remove it before you shower, swim or go to the gym. Water and sweat wear on the stretch core, and chlorine, salt and soap can stain a stone this absorbent.
- Put it on last. Sun cream, aftershave, hair products and body lotion sink into howlite and can leave it looking dull or faintly yellow.
- Give it space. Harder beads and metal can scuff a soft stone over time. Small marks are part of its character, but keep it apart from other pieces in a pouch or box rather than in a tangle.
- Clean it gently. A clean, dry cloth is all it needs. Skip jewellery dips and ultrasonic cleaners.
Our beaded bracelet guide explains how stretch-core strands are put together and how to keep the cord in shape.
Howlite as a Gift
Howlite isn't on any official birthstone list, which frees it up for other occasions. Its link with calm makes it a thoughtful present for someone heading into a hectic stretch: a new job, a first child, exams, a move. The stretch fit forgives a guessed wrist size, and a white strand is easy to add to whatever he already wears. Pair it with a matte onyx strand and you've given him a full stack.
Howlite FAQs
What does howlite mean for a man?
In modern crystal practice howlite stands for calm, patience and a steadier temper. Those meanings are recent, since the stone was only named in 1868, and they're beliefs rather than promises. Most men treat it as a reminder to slow down.
Is your howlite natural?
Yes. Our Howlite Bead Bracelet is made from natural howlite beads, kept in the stone's own white with natural grey veining, so each bead is patterned differently.
Why is some howlite blue?
Because it has been dyed. Howlite is porous and takes colour easily, so it's often dyed blue to imitate turquoise or lapis lazuli, and sometimes red to imitate coral. Undyed howlite is white or off-white with grey to black veins.
How can you tell if turquoise is really dyed howlite?
Look closely at the veins and any small cracks. Dye tends to pool there, so the lines look darker or more saturated than the rest of the stone. A very low price for bright blue turquoise is another clue. For certainty, a gem lab can test it.
Is howlite a birthstone?
No. Howlite doesn't appear on the traditional or modern birthstone lists, so it works as a gift in any month.
Can you wear a howlite bracelet in the shower?
No. The stretch core lasts longer kept away from water, and howlite is absorbent enough to pick up soap and chlorine. Set it aside while you shower, swim or work out.
Does howlite scratch easily?
More easily than most stones. With a hardness of roughly 3.5, it's softer than quartz, onyx or tiger's eye, so metal and harder beads can mark it over time. Storing it on its own keeps it smooth.
Which wrist should a howlite bracelet go on?
Crystal practice treats the left hand as the side that takes energy in, so some people wear calming stones there. In practice, wear it wherever it's comfortable. Plenty of men keep beads and watch on separate wrists.
Quiet on Purpose
Howlite won't win any contests for attention, and it isn't trying to. It's a plain white stone with a short history, a calm reputation and a knack for making everything around it look sharper.
