Cord Bracelets for Men: How to Wear, Stack and Fit Them

Cord Bracelets for Men: How to Wear, Stack and Fit Them

If you've never worn a bracelet before, a black cord bracelet is the easiest place to start. It weighs next to nothing, it adjusts to fit in seconds, and because it's mostly soft black cord with one small piece of metal, it looks relaxed rather than dressed up. You can put it on in the morning and forget it's there.

Below we cover what a cord bracelet actually is, how it compares with leather, how our two cord styles fasten, and how to wear one on its own, next to a watch or as part of a stack.

What Is a Cord Bracelet?

A cord bracelet is a band of braided or twisted cord worn around the wrist, usually finished with a single metal piece that either decorates it, fastens it, or does both. There are no links and no fiddly clasp, so it's adjusted by hand on the wrist instead.

Ours are handwoven from tightly braided black nylon cord. Nylon is a practical choice: it's strong, it's soft to the touch, it shrugs off water, and it keeps its shape. Over time the braid relaxes a little and takes on some character, which is part of the appeal. The metal details have a stainless steel core finished in 18K gold or rhodium, so they keep their colour.

Cord sits in its own corner of the bracelet world. It's softer than a metal rope bracelet and simpler than a beaded bracelet, which is why it's so easy to pair with either. For a wider look at every style, our guide to the types of men's bracelets covers the lot.

Cord vs Leather: Which Should You Choose?

Cord and leather get compared a lot, because both bring a soft, dark texture to the wrist. They wear quite differently, though.

Cord Leather
Look Slim, light, relaxed Thicker, more structured
Feel Soft and flexible from day one Firmer, softens with wear
Water Copes with a shower or rain Best kept dry
Fastening Adjusts on the wrist Usually a clasp
Best for Every day, travel, stacking A bolder single bracelet

If you want something you never have to think about, choose cord. If you want the bracelet to have a little more weight and presence, choose leather. Our Leather Rope Bracelet is two strands of braided black leather with an engraved hook clasp, in silver or gold, and it sits well next to a cord if you want both textures at once.

Sliding Knot or Toggle?

We make two cord bracelets, and the difference comes down to how they adjust and what sits on top of the wrist.

The Black Cord Bracelet: clover and sliding knots

The Black Cord Bracelet has a small clover at the centre, framed by the cord on both sides, and a sliding knot at each end. Pull the loose ends and the knots draw the bracelet in; push the knots apart and it opens up. It's the more decorative of the two, because the clover sits right on top of the wrist where it's seen. If you like the motif, our guide to clover bracelets and necklaces shows how to carry it through the rest of your jewellery.

The Black Cord Toggle Bracelet: one polished slider

The Black Cord Toggle Bracelet is the plainer option. Both ends of the cord run through a single polished slider and finish in metal tips. Move the slider towards your wrist to tighten it and back to loosen it. With no motif on show, it reads as pure black cord with a flash of metal, so it's the one to choose if you want something quieter.

Gold or Silver Details?

Both styles come in gold and silver, and black cord works with either. The simplest rule is to match the metal you already wear most, whether that's a watch, a ring or a chain.

  • Gold: warmer, and it stands out more against the black cord. It suits a gold watch or gold chain, and looks especially good on tanned skin in summer.
  • Silver: cooler and lower-key. It's the easier match for a steel watch and for anyone who mostly wears silver.

Because the cord itself is black, mixing metals across a stack is easier than it is with metal bracelets. A gold cord next to a silver chain doesn't clash; the cord sits between them as a neutral.

How to Wear a Cord Bracelet

On its own

A single cord bracelet is about as low-effort as jewellery gets. It suits T-shirts, knitwear, linen shirts with the sleeves pushed up, and summer clothes. Wear it slightly snug so it sits just above the wrist bone rather than sliding over your hand.

With a watch

Cord is one of the best things to wear next to a watch. It's slim, so it doesn't crowd the case, and most of it is soft cord, so there's far less metal knocking against your watch than with a chain. Wear it on the same wrist just above the watch, or on the opposite wrist to balance things out. Our guide on how to wear bracelets covers more ways to pair a bracelet with a watch.

With beads

A cord and a bead bracelet are a natural pair: two soft, matte textures in the same dark colour, with a little metal on each. Try a gold cord next to the Matte Onyx Stone Bracelet in gold, or silver with silver.

With chain

For a fuller stack, put a cord beside a slim chain bracelet such as the 4mm Cuban bracelet in gold or silver. The chain brings the shine and the cord softens it. Two cords together work as well, especially one of each style, as long as the metals match.

Getting the Fit Right

Both of our cord bracelets are one size and adjust from 19cm to 22cm, so most men won't need to think about sizing at all. Because you set the fit on your wrist, you can wear it a little looser in winter over a cuff and closer in summer.

As a guide, a cord bracelet should sit just above the wrist bone with room to slip a finger underneath. If you have a particularly slim or broad wrist, or you'd like to check before you order, our guide to measuring your bracelet size and the bracelet size guide will tell you exactly where you sit.

Looking After a Cord Bracelet

  • Water: our nylon cord is naturally water resistant and the metal details have a stainless steel core, so a shower or a rainy day won't hurt it.
  • Drying: after it gets wet, let the cord dry fully before you tighten it again, and pat it with a towel rather than leaving it damp under a watch strap.
  • Swimming: take it off for pools, hot tubs and the sea. Chlorine and salt are hard on any finish.
  • Cleaning: if the cord picks up dirt, a little mild soap and warm water with a soft brush is enough. Rinse it and let it air dry.
  • Storage: keep it flat or loosely coiled, away from heavier metal pieces that could scratch the gold or silver details.

Cord Bracelet FAQs

What is a cord bracelet made of?

A cord bracelet is made from braided or twisted cord rather than metal links or leather. Ours are handwoven from tightly braided black nylon cord, with metal details in a stainless steel core finished in 18K gold or rhodium.

Is a cord bracelet better than leather?

It depends on how you'll wear it. Cord is lighter, slimmer and copes with getting wet, so it suits everyday wear. Leather is thicker and more structured, so it has more presence, but it's happier kept dry.

How do you adjust a sliding knot bracelet?

Hold the bracelet on your wrist and pull the loose ends to tighten it. To loosen it, push the two knots away from each other along the cord. The knots grip the cord, so the size stays where you set it.

What size is a cord bracelet?

Our cord bracelets are one size and adjust from 19cm to 22cm, which covers most men's wrists. If you're not sure where yours falls, our bracelet sizing guide shows you how to measure.

Can you shower with a cord bracelet?

Yes. Our nylon cord is naturally water resistant and the metal details have a stainless steel core, so the shower and the rain are fine. Let the cord dry fully afterwards, and take it off for pools, hot tubs and the sea.

Which wrist should a cord bracelet go on?

Either. If you wear a watch, a cord bracelet works next to it on the same wrist or on its own on the other. Most men wear it on the wrist that feels most natural and leave it there.

Can you wear a cord bracelet every day?

Yes. That's what cord is best at. It's light, it's soft against the skin, and with a quick adjustment it sits comfortably from a day at a desk to an evening out.

Do cord bracelets suit older men?

Yes. A plain black cord with a single small metal detail is one of the most understated bracelets there is, so it works at any age, with a suit as easily as a T-shirt.

Start With One Cord

A cord bracelet asks very little of you, and it builds well with almost anything else on your wrist. Start with one, in the metal you wear most, then add beads or a chain when you're ready.
