Men’s Jewellery for Work: What to Wear to the Office

Men’s Jewellery for Work: What to Wear to the Office

Most men can wear jewellery to work, provided it stays understated: a couple of pieces, three at most, that hug the body and make no noise. A signet or plain band, a fine chain beneath the collar and a slim bracelet cover almost every workplace.

How far you go depends on your dress code and your day. Below, we go through what to wear piece by piece, how to adjust for different workplaces, what to do for interviews and first days, and the practical details nobody mentions until a bracelet starts tapping on the desk. For the bigger question of why jewellery has stepped into the space the tie left, our Culture piece Is Jewellery the New Tie? looks at exactly that.

The Working Rule: Small, Quiet and Close to the Body

Three questions sort almost every piece:

  • Is it small? Fine chains, slim bracelets and flat rings stay in proportion to a shirt or knit. Anything chunky pulls focus in a meeting rather than adding to the outfit.
  • Is it quiet? Pieces that jangle, swing or flash with every movement are better kept for the evening.
  • Does it stay put? Jewellery that sits close, under a collar, snug on a finger or flat on the wrist, gets forgotten about, and at work that's ideal.

Limit yourself to three pieces with one metal leading, and you'll rarely put a foot wrong.

What to Wear, Piece by Piece

Rings

A ring is the natural first piece: always visible, never in the way. A Square Signet Ring (Silver) or Round Signet Ring (Gold) on the little finger looks considered in any office, while a Round Band Ring (Silver) 5mm is quieter still. For a touch of colour, the Onyx Squared Stone Signet Ring (Gold) sets black onyx into a clean square face. Not sure which finger? We answer that in our signet-wearing guide, and you can browse every style among our signet rings.

Chains

At work, a chain belongs under the collar or just inside it. A 2mm chain like the Connell Chain (Silver) 2mm or Connell Chain (Gold) 2mm lies flat and vanishes when you button up. A pendant is fine if it's small enough to tuck under your shirt. Our guide to chain widths shows why 2mm to 3mm suits workwear best.

Bracelets

Choose something slim and close-fitting that slides under a shirt cuff. The Classic Cuff 3mm (Gold) sits flat with no clasp to snag, while the Connell Bracelet (Gold) 2mm and Snake Bracelet (Silver) 2mm are slim enough to share a wrist with your watch.

Earrings

A small stud such as the Round Stud Earring (Silver) works in most workplaces. Save hoops and charm earrings for days when the dress code relaxes. Our guide to men's earring styles has more on choosing one.

Reading Your Dress Code

Every workplace draws its own line. As a general guide:

Workplace What usually works What to hold back on
Corporate and client-facing A signet or band, a fine chain beneath the collar, a watch Stacks, statement chains, hoops
Smart casual A signet, a slim bracelet, a fine chain at an open collar Anything that clatters on the desk
Creative and relaxed Layered fine chains, a couple of rings, a small earring Very little, beyond what's practical
Hands-on and on your feet A plain band or bare hands, a chain tucked away Anything that could catch on tools or machinery
Hybrid and video calls A fine chain or stud that shows on camera Pieces that flash or rattle near the microphone

If your workplace has a written policy, particularly around safety or food, follow it. Some roles ask for jewellery to come off entirely, and for good reason.

Interviews, First Days and Big Meetings

When you're making a first impression, strip it back to the pieces you'd wear without thinking: a ring and a watch, or a fine chain out of sight. It isn't about hiding who you are. It's about making sure people remember what you said rather than what was on your wrist.

Once you've had a week to see how colleagues dress, add pieces back gradually. Most offices turn out to be more relaxed than the interview suggested.

Practical Details at a Desk

  • Keyboards and laptops. A bracelet resting on a metal laptop can mark both. A flat cuff or a soft chain bracelet is kinder to your kit, and slipping a bracelet off for a long typing session is no bad idea.
  • Shirt cuffs and watches. Slim bracelets slide under a cuff without pulling it. If a bracelet keeps knocking against your watch, switch it to your free wrist.
  • The commute. Bulky signets can catch on glove linings and coat pockets, which is one more reason to keep work rings flat.
  • Video calls. A slim chain or small stud reads well on camera. Anything that swings can catch the light or tap against a headset.

A Simple Work Rotation

  1. The everyday set. A Square Signet Ring (Silver), a Connell Chain (Silver) 2mm under the collar, and your watch.
  2. The client day. A Round Signet Ring (Gold) and a Classic Cuff 3mm (Silver), with nothing at the neck.
  3. The dress-down Friday. Your everyday set plus a slim bracelet or a small stud.

More pieces in the same spirit sit in our minimal jewellery collection.

Jewellery at Work: FAQs

Is it professional for men to wear jewellery at work?

In most workplaces, yes, provided it's understated. A ring, a fine chain and a slim bracelet read as polished. If your role involves safety equipment or food, check any written policy first.

Which pieces work best in an office?

A signet or plain band, a fine chain worn beneath the collar, a slim bracelet plus a small stud earring if your ears are pierced.

Can I wear a chain to work?

Yes. Keep it fine, around 2mm, and wear it under or just inside your collar so it shows only now and then.

Should I take my jewellery off for an interview?

Not necessarily, but keep it minimal. A ring and a watch are plenty until you've seen how people there dress.

How many pieces of jewellery is too many for work?

Three is a good upper limit in most offices. Past that, the pieces start competing with each other and with you.

Is a signet ring appropriate for work?

Very. A signet is about as traditional as men's jewellery gets, and a plain or onyx one suits almost any office.

Can I wear gold and silver together at work?

Yes, as long as one metal clearly leads, such as a silver ring and chain worn with a gold watch.

Can men wear earrings to work?

In most workplaces, a small stud is fine. Keep larger hoops and charm earrings for more relaxed days.

Dress for the Day, Not the Rulebook

Good work jewellery looks right at a desk at nine and still feels like yours at six. Start with a ring, add a fine chain, and build from there.
