Choosing Tungsten might just be the best decision you make when it comes to your wedding ring. It’s got that clean, classic look and a reputation for being virtually indestructible. For a lot of guys, that’s exactly what they’re after: something that looks great, feels solid, and doesn’t need constant care.
But if you’re here, you’ve probably still got a few questions. How long will it actually last? Is it really as durable as people say? Will it still look good years from now? And do you need to do anything to keep it that way? Totally fair questions, especially if it’s your first time buying a ring or you just get stuck with something flimsy. The good news is you’re in the right place.

First off, great choice going with Tungsten for your wedding band. But here’s where a lot of guys get caught out… not all Tungsten rings are made the same.
Plenty of brands, including some big names, cut corners. Instead of using pure Tungsten, they mix in softer metals or add inlays like wood, carbon fibre, or even dinosaur bone. Yeah, they sound cool at first, but in reality, those kinds of rings just don’t last. The coatings fade, inlays crack, and what seemed like a good choice starts to look beat up way too soon.
A proper Tungsten band doesn’t rely on any of those gimmicks. No weak coatings. No fragile inlays. Just pure Tungsten that will naturally take whatever life throws at you, and keep looking pristine day in day out.
The short answer is no, not if you’re getting the real deal.
If you’ve ever seen a Tungsten ring that looks dull or faded, it’s not the Tungsten itself that’s the issue, it’s the coating. Pure Tungsten has that signature gunmetal colour that won’t fade or tarnish, no matter how often you wear it.
Things get a little trickier when you’re looking at black, gold, or silver Tungsten rings. These use Tungsten as the base and apply a real layer of gold or silver over the top. When done right, it’s a solid option. But if the coating’s too thin or applied poorly, it’s only a matter of time before it starts to wear down. Here’s what to look for:
Coating Thickness: If you’re going for a plated tungsten ring, make sure it has a thick, high quality coating. You’re looking for at least 2.5 micron layers of pure gold or silver. Not flimsy sprays of colour.
Protective Coating: A gold or silver tungsten ring should have an extra layer of protection, like rhodium or a high quality PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating to protect the metal and keep it looking fresh for life.
Tungsten rings like in the example above are triple coated in silver for maximum durability, shine and luster. Plus, they protect that thick coating by combining BOTH rhodium and PVD finishes. This results in a wedding band that has the traditional look you want and the modern durability that you need.
So, how long does a Tungsten ring actually last compared to other wedding bands? Compared to traditional metals like gold, platinum, or even palladium, it’s in a different league. Here’s why:
Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials on earth, ranking 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (just shy of diamond). Gold and platinum don’t even come close to that. And, while softer metals will pick up scratches and dents pretty quickly, tungsten will stay smooth and polished for decades.
Tungsten doesn’t tarnish, corrode, fade, or react with moisture at all, meaning it stays looking fresh whether you’re swimming, working out, or just living your life.
Precious metals need regular maintenance to keep them looking new, whereas Tungsten needs next to no upkeep at all. If you're looking for a wedding band that’s ready for a lifetime of wear without constant polishing or care, tungsten is the way to go.
One of the best things about tungsten rings is they need little to no maintenance. That being said, all nice things need a little TLC. So, here’s 3 quick tips:
