3 Quick Ways to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Working out your ring size can feel pretty daunting at first, especially compared to a chain or bracelet, where sizing is much more forgiving. Yes it takes a bit more thought, but the good news is it’s much easier than you think. A lot of blogs out there make it seem overcomplicated, but once you know a couple of key things, the process becomes so much simpler. In fact, with the right tools, you can find your perfect fit from the comfort of your home in minutes.

Why Size Matters

A ring that fits well isn’t just about comfort (though that’s a big part of it). It’s about the confidence that comes with it. When your ring sits just right, there’s no distractions, no worrying it’ll slip off mid-handshake, and no struggle to twist it off at the end of the day. In fact, wearing the right ring is one of the smallest things you can add to your look that can have the biggest impact.

Before we get into the “how,” let’s go over some things about your fingers that I guarantee you don’t know:

Why Does Finding Your Ring Size Feel Complicated?

Not many people know this, but your fingers rarely ever stay the same size. In fact, they’re constantly changing throughout the day. Sounds pretty weird, right? But think about it. Have you ever noticed how your rings feel tighter in summer or looser after you’ve been out in the cold? That’s assuming you’ve actually worn rings before. If you haven’t, you’re in the right place. The truth is, your finger size depends on a bunch of factors, which when you are aware of them, makes finding your ring size so much easier. These include:

  • Temperature: Like we’ve touched on above, the cold shrinks your fingers, while heat makes them swell.

  • Time of Day: Fingers tend to be at their smallest in the morning and largest by evening. Again, this is because your hands tend to warm up as you become more active throughout the day. The measurements taken at the end of the day are probably the ones to go by, as this will be when your fingers are largest.

  • Hydration and Salt: When you're dehydrated, your body holds onto water, and this can cause your fingers to swell. On the other hand, too much salt causes your body to retain more water, which can also lead to swelling. So, when you’re properly hydrated, your fingers are more likely to be their normal size.

  • Knuckle Size vs. Finger Shape: If the knuckle in the middle of your finger is larger than the base of your finger (or vice versa), it can make finding the right fit a little trickier. This is fairly uncommon, but something to watch out for.

That may all sound a little overwhelming, but it really isn’t that big of a deal. It just means that when you come to measure your ring size, it's important to take a few measurements throughout the day. This way, you can use these measurements to determine your “average size,” and the one that is most likely to fit you.

What Does The Perfect Fit Feel Like?

Your ring should be snug enough that it won’t slide off but loose enough to slide over your knuckle with a very gentle twist. Too loose, and it might fall off when you least expect it. Too tight, and you’ll be wrestling it off at the end of the day. Neither of these scenarios is what you want. There should be very little slipping, no pinching, and certainly no constant adjusting. Just a ring that feels right, all day, every day.

It sounds like an oversimplification, but the ‘right size’ is simply a ring that fits your finger comfortably. If you're not used to wearing a ring, it can be difficult to know what this ‘should’ actually feel like. Be prepared, though, that even if you get the perfect fit, you’ll still feel it's presence on your finger throughout the day. At least in the short-term anyway. In time it’ll feel like second nature, and eventually, you’ll forget you're even wearing it altogether.

Now, let’s go over 3 easy ways to measure your ring size at home so you can get on with ordering that ring you’ve had your eye on.

DIY at Home with String or Paper

Sometimes, the simplest tools are all you need:

  1. Grab a piece of non-stretchy string, dental floss, or just a strip of paper.
  2. Wrap it around the widest part of your finger (usually the base of your finger, just below the knuckle).
  3. Mark where it overlaps, then measure the length with a ruler in millimeters.
  4. Use a ring size chart to match the circumference to your size.
Ring Sizer (Recommended Option)

Most brands offer an easy ring sizer such as this one. Simply slip your finger through the sizer and tighten until you get a fit that sits around the base of your finger, just below your knuckle. Simple, effective, and no room for error.

Measure an Existing Ring

Okay, let's say you’ve already got a ring that fits perfectly, but you’ve seen another ring that caught your eye. Let’s take this oval signet ring as an example. Well, let’s work smarter, not harder. Lay your existing ring flat and measure the inside diameter with a ruler. Take that measurement and compare it to the sizing chart of the product page of the round signet ring below you're wanting to upgrade to. Easy. You’ll be wearing that new signet ring in no time, with a guaranteed fit.

One thing worth mentioning, though, is that the width of the band can also affect the fit. Thicker bands tend to feel tighter, so if you’re upgrading to something slightly thicker, you might want to size up ever so slightly.

Mistakes to Avoid When Measuring Your Ring Size

  • Measure More Than Once: Remember, fingers change size throughout the day, so check a few times—morning, afternoon, and evening. The size you measure in the evening is often the most reliable since fingers tend to be slightly larger by then.
  • Measure the correct hand: Your dominant hand’s fingers are usually a bit bigger. So, if you’re planning on wearing the ring on your right hand and you’re right-handed, don’t assume it’ll be the same size as your left.

  • It’ll feel weird at first: Remember that even if you get the fit spot on, wearing a new ring will feel odd to begin with. Especially if you're new to wearing rings, or wearing a wedding band for the first time. Your ring should feel secure without being a struggle to remove. In time, you’ll forget it’s even there.
