Artigo: How to Wash a Cap Without Ruining It

How to Wash a Cap Without Ruining It

How to Wash a Cap Without Ruining It

Before a cap goes anywhere near water, check its label: if it says dry clean only, as every one of ours does, it shouldn't be washed at all. Between wears, a soft brush, a little air and a barely damp cloth with plain water will keep it looking right, and a dry cleaner can handle the rest.

Caps are harder to clean than most of what you own. They're built with a stiffened front, a shaped peak, raised embroidery and a sweatband that does a lot of quiet work, and a washing machine can undo all of that in one cycle. Here's how to look after one properly, from everyday brushing to sweat lines, fabric by fabric.

Before You Start: Read the Label

The care label is stitched inside the crown or along the sweatband, and it's worth thirty seconds of your time. It tells you what the maker has tested the cap to survive.

  • Dry clean only. No washing machine, no sink. Brush it, air it, spot-clean small marks with water alone, and hand bigger jobs to a dry cleaner. Every CRAFTD cap falls into this group.
  • Hand wash. Some simple, unstructured cotton caps can take a gentle hand wash. Follow the label's instructions exactly.
  • No label. Treat it as dry clean only. It's the safer assumption for anything with a stiff front or embroidery.

Why Caps Are Tricky to Clean

A cap looks simple, but several parts react badly to soaking and agitation:

  • The reinforced front. Most structured caps have a stiffened backing behind the front panels to hold the crown upright. Water softens it, and it rarely sets back the same way.
  • The pre-curved peak. The brim has a shaped insert. Bend it too far or soak it and the curve can warp.
  • Embroidery. Raised stitching can fray, pucker or lose its colour.
  • The sweatband. It absorbs sweat and skin oil by design, so it's usually the first part to need attention.
  • Straps and fittings. Metal buckles and leather straps, such as the strap on our Varsity Cap (Olive), don't want to be drenched.

Everyday Care Between Wears

Most of the work is done in small habits, long before a cap ever looks dirty.

  • Brush it. Run a soft clothes brush over the crown and peak to clear dust and lint, with light strokes over embroidery.
  • Air the sweatband. When it's been a hot day, give the cap somewhere open to sit so the band dries out before storage.
  • Use a lint roller on darker caps, which pick up fluff fast.
  • Give it a proper home. A wall hook, or a shelf with the crown facing up, lets the front hold its shape. Don't crush it into a bag.

Our guide to cap types explains how fabric and structure affect how a cap wears over time.

Sweat Lines and Small Marks

The sweatband line is the problem most people are really searching for. Here's how to deal with it, and with small marks on the crown, using nothing but water:

  1. Act early. A fresh mark lifts far more easily than one that's had weeks to settle.
  2. Use plain water only. No soap, detergent or stain remover of any kind. They can leave residue, lift colour and mark the fabric.
  3. Dampen a cloth, then wring it out until it's barely damp. You want moisture, never drips.
  4. Dab, don't rub. Press the cloth onto the mark or along the sweatband, lift, and repeat with a clean section. Rubbing pushes dirt deeper and roughens the surface.
  5. Blot it dry with a dry cloth or kitchen roll, then leave the cap to air dry in shape.

If a mark won't shift after a couple of goes, stop there. A set-in stain needs a dry cleaner, not harder scrubbing.

Cleaning by Fabric: Twill, Corduroy, Wool and Washed Cotton

Different fabrics need slightly different handling:

Fabric Between wears For a small mark
Cotton twill Soft brush over the crown and peak Dab with a barely damp cloth and plain water
Corduroy Brush with the ridges, not against them Dab lightly along the ridge, then brush once dry
Wool blend Soft brush to lift dust and lint Blot gently; send it for dry cleaning if the mark stays
Washed and distressed cotton Brush lightly; trim loose threads, don't pull Dab with plain water, accepting that the worn look is part of it

Corduroy, as on the Gentlemen's Club Cap - Cord (Black/Yellow), shows brush marks if you work against the grain. Distressed caps like the Distressed Cap (Black) are meant to look broken in, so a little character is welcome. For more on that look, see how we style the Distressed Cap.

Light Caps and Dark Caps

Light caps, such as the Yacht Club Cap (Cream/Black) and Gentlemen's Club Cap (White/Black), show sweat lines and fingerprints first. Brush them more often, keep your hands clean when you adjust the peak, and deal with marks the same day.

Dark caps, like the Gentlemen's Club Cap (Black), hide marks but show dust, lint and fading. Keep them out of strong sun when you're not wearing them, and run a lint roller over the crown now and then.

Drying and Reshaping

Even a light spot-clean leaves a little damp, and the way a cap dries decides whether it keeps its shape.

  • Pad the crown. Fill it loosely with a rolled towel so the front dries upright.
  • Dry it crown up, somewhere with good air flow, and give it time.
  • Keep it away from heat. Radiators, hairdryers and direct sun can shrink fabric, fade colour and warp the peak.
  • Reshape the peak by hand, a little at a time, while it's dry. Forcing a sharp bend can crack the insert.

When It Needs a Dry Cleaner

Water and a cloth handle everyday marks. Book it in with a dry cleaner if:

  • a stain hasn't moved after two careful attempts
  • the whole sweatband has discoloured, not just a line
  • it has picked up oil, food or anything greasy
  • it's simply ready for a proper clean after a long season of wear

Tell them it's a structured cap with embroidery, so they handle the front and peak with care.

A soft crown is easier to reshape, but just as easy to crush. Featured: Distressed Cap (Black).

What Never to Do

  • The washing machine. Even on a gentle cycle, the drum can bend the peak and soften the front.
  • The dishwasher. It's a popular hack, but the heat and detergent are hard on fabric, embroidery and fittings.
  • The tumble dryer. Heat and tumbling will shrink and misshape a cap faster than anything.
  • Soap, detergent, bleach or stain remover. Plain water is all a cap like ours should ever see.
  • Soaking. A cap should never be submerged or left in water.

Cap Care: FAQs

Will a washing machine ruin a cap?

It can. The spin and tumble can warp the peak, collapse the stiffened front and dull the embroidery. Ours are dry clean only, so they should never go in one.

Can you wash a cap in the dishwasher?

No. The heat and the detergent are both harsh on fabric, embroidery and any metal or leather fittings, and the racks can bend the peak.

How do you get sweat stains out of a cap?

Catch them early. Dab the sweatband with a barely damp cloth and plain water, blot it dry, then leave it to air. For a set-in mark, have it dry cleaned.

How do you clean a white cap?

Brush it often, deal with marks the same day using a barely damp cloth and plain water, and blot rather than rub. Anything that won't lift goes to a dry cleaner.

How often should you clean a cap?

Brush it after every few wears and air the sweatband after any warm day. Spot-clean marks as they happen, and save the dry cleaner for when it needs more.

How do you dry a cap without losing its shape?

Pad the crown with a rolled towel, rest it crown up somewhere airy and leave it to dry naturally, away from radiators and direct sun.

Can you clean a corduroy cap?

Yes, gently. Brush along the ridges to lift dust and spot-clean small marks with a barely damp cloth. Never scrub across the cord.

How do you fix a cap that's lost its shape?

Pad the crown with a rolled towel and let it sit crown up for two days or so. Bend a flattened peak back by hand, a little at a time.

Look After It and It'll Last

A good cap earns its place by being worn often. A few minutes of attention keep it right for years: brush it, let it breathe, catch marks early with water alone, and leave the big jobs to a dry cleaner.
